Capricorn, Constellation and Zodiac Gemstones

Capricorn, Constellation and Zodiac Gemstones

Capricorn is derived from the Latin CAPRA meaning Goat and CORNU meaning Horn, thus, the horns of the goat. This is in reference to the constellation Capricornus which resembles the horns of the sacred goat.

The constellation is located in an area of sky called the Sea or the Water, consisting of many water-related constellations such as Aquarius, Pisces and Eridanus. It is the smallest constellation in the zodiac.

The constellation Capricornus has one of the oldest mythological associations, having been consistently represented as a hybrid of a goat and a fish since the Middle Bronze Age, when the Babylonians used MULSUḪUR.MAŠ "The Goat-Fish" as a symbol of their god Ea.

Capricornus is also sometimes identified as Pan, the god with a goat's horns and legs, who saved himself from the monster Typhon by giving himself a fish's tail and diving into a river. Moreover, for helping his brother Zeus in the battle against Typhon, Pan was rewarded in his image becoming the Capricornus constellation.

In astrology, Capricorn is considered an earth sign, negative sign, and one of the four cardinal signs. It is said to be ruled by the planet Saturn.

There appears to be a connection between traditional characterisations of Capricorn as a sea goat and the Sumerian god of wisdom and waters, Enki, who also had the head and upper body of a goat and the lower body and tail of a fish. Later known as Ea in Akkadian and Babylonian mythology, Enki was the god of intelligence (gestú, literally "ear"), creation, crafts; magic; water, seawater and lakewater (a, aba, ab).

In Hindu astrology, the equivalent of Capricorn is Makara, the Crocodile.

Capricorns are said to be ambitious, self-disciplined, determined, dependable and responsible. This is their positive traits. However they are also described as arrogant, stubborn and sarcastic. Those who have Capricorn friends or relatives can verify or refute this.

The gemstone for Capricorn is the ruby. Those born in December under the zodiacal sign of Capricorn have turquoise, blue topaz, tanzanite and blue zircon as their birthstones.

Capricorns born in January have a wide variety of colors to choose from their birthstone of garnets; the colors include golden Mali garnet, pink-orange malaya garnet (also sometimes called "imperial garnet"), green demantoid and tsavorite garnet, orange spessartite and hessonite garnet, and even color-change garnet.

Finally, "Under the tropical zodiac, the sun transits Capricorn from about December 21 to January 21 the following year, and under the sidereal zodiac, the sun transits the constellation of Capricorn from approximately January 16 to February 16."

Happy birthday to all Capricorns!
