The Modern-day Birthstone List began in the United States in 1912. This idea was obtained from the breast plate of Aaron, the Jewish high priest. This breast plate is described in great detail in Exodus 28:15-21 where each of the 12 gemstones represents one of the 12 sons of Jacob, later known as Israel. Though Biblical scholars do not agree on the exact name of these gemstones, it is assumed that in the first row of the breast plate was placed Carnelian, Chrysolite, and Emerald; and in the second row, Turquoise, Sapphire and AMETHYST; in the third row, Jacinth, Agate, and Crystal; in the fourth and last row, Beryl, Lapis Lazuli and Jasper.

Notice that Amethyst appears in the second row. If you compare these gemstones to the modern-day birthstone list, you will notice a similarity. Some names have been changed to the gemstone name given today. For example, Jacinth is now known as Zircon.

Note, January is linked with February through the zodiac sign of Aquarius and February and March are linked through the sign of Pisces. All these months have their own gemstones.

The South area is linked with illumination, reputation and fame.
